Frequently Asked Questions by Businesses
How much petrol does the average motorist purchase at each visit to a service station?

Good question. It does vary slightly from area to area, however when we had signed up our first 350 service stations only a handful exceeded 30 litres on a true average sales basis.

Has the rapidly rising price of petrol changed this?

Our experience has been that motorist are now more likely than ever to “NOT FILL ‘ER UP” relying on a more regular, more modest spend per visit.

How much does the average motorist consume in petrol per week/year?

According to the NRMA a vehicle does an “average” of 15,000 klms per annum.
Therefore we need to look at some consumption figure examples.

Vehicle City cycle Country run range Average
Small 10L/100kls 8L/100kls 9L/100kls
Medium 12.5L/100kls 9.5L/100kls 11L/100kls
Large 16L/100kls 12L/100kls 14L/100kls

Taking “medium” as the averaged size car and 11.5L/100 kls as the average consumption = 15,000 kls per annum ÷ 52 = 288 kls per week ÷ 100kls x 11.00 kls/per litre = 31.68 Litres per week.

If a medium sized vehicle averaged 10L per 100 kls and clocked up 15,000 kls per annum it would use 28.8 litres per week.

Is the use of Petrol dockets restricted to the lower income families?

No in fact the opposite. The highest usage, although only marginally is in the $70,000 per annum household income group, next is the income bracket immediately below the $70,000 p.a.

What is Servo Savers experience with people using multiple dockets?

One Brisbane service station recently conducted its own very comprehensive survey 5 months into the program and advised us that his “average” had gone up to 1.9 dockets per customer. His advice was for us to go from a maximum of three (3) dockets per redemption to five (5) dockets.

How long before the public start using multiple dockets at redemption?

Initially the vast majority of transactions are single dockets or multiples of one businesses dockets. It does take time for your customers to use your dockets, let alone another businesses. This time will depend on how pro-active you and your staff are at the point of sale. Don’t forget over 70% of motorists are using fuel dockets (and that includes your customers), but we are changing habits and it takes work, time and patience.

Have Servo Savers tried lower discounts than 6¢ per litre and is there any significant difference between 4¢ and 6¢ a litre off?

Our test marketing was done at 4¢ per litre off. Whilst we got redemptions it was not in sufficient numbers to get overly excited. In other words our $1.20 off 30 litres did not win over many current docket users. We then went to 5¢ per litre off per docket, or 15¢ with 3 dockets and in every established market we have exceeded 80% of our weekly target redemption in just 6-10 months.
With discounts more is better!
Five Servo Savers dockets each saving 6¢ per litre ($1.80) saves our “average” motorist $9.00 per week.

How old is an average docket when it is redeemed?

Two to three weeks. There goes the theory that people shop and rush to the nearest service station to redeem their Servo Savers dockets. They use them where and when they are ready.

Are dockets generally redeemed at the nearest service station?

It’s amazing how far away dockets are redeemed. We have had Tasmanian issued dockets redeemed in South Australia. Toowoomba’s in Cairns. But generally speaking 60% of redemptions are at the nearest, 30% the next nearest 2-3 and 10% out of area.
